KALAMATA 1821: ROADS OF FREEDOM
A contemporary journey to 1821
In June 2018 we set upon a journey whose main purpose was to bring together and display the historical, cultural and social traits which contributed to the liberation of Kalamata on March 23, 1821. Through the roads of liberation, history and culture, we will rediscover not only Kalamata, but also the picturesque mountainous and seaside villages of Messenia. Moreover, we shall get to know the pioneers of Greece’s struggle and thus become familiar with the unique local traditions whose origins are lost in the mists of time but nonetheless are preserved until today. The Roads of Freedom, with Kalamata as starting point on March 23rd 1821, kindled the torch of liberty thereby inspiring a nation rediscovering its identity to revolt.
The program ‘’KALAMATA 1821: ROADS OF FREEDOM’’ is implemented within the context of the operational program "Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation 2014-2020 (EPAnEk)" of the ministries of Finance and Development respectively. The project has been selected as the most representative in the field of Culture and it is implemented by the joint venture of the University of the Peloponnese, the Municipally Owned Enterprise of the Municipality of Kalamata (ΦΑΡΙΣ) and the production company View Master Films.
Funded by the European Social Fund and the Greek state in the context of "Research-Create-Innovate" Act.
“You are in duty bound and you can […] become a hero. Love danger. […] Which road should you take? The most craggy ascent!”
Quote from the Ascetic of Nikos Kazantzakis
